Why Mother’s New KFC Campaign Is Unmissable

The ads I still remember from twenty years ago were carried by unforgettable songs and real artists. Mother’s new KFC campaign shows why that still matters, especially now.

Mother ad agency calls on the talents of YouTube star Frank Watkinson to bring a soothing note to KFC’s advertising

This is not our work. I wish it was, because Mother’s new KFC campaign is completely unmissable. Frank Watkinson sits in front of a red curtain with an acoustic guitar and sings “Linger” by The Cranberries. The whole film leans on the strength of the song and the honesty of his performance.

It made me think about the ads I still remember from twenty years ago. Sony Bravia with José González is an obvious one. Those films often had the same thing in common: a great song, performed by an artist with a real voice and a clear point of view. The music gave the work a life beyond the campaign. You heard the first few seconds years later and the whole film came back. This KFC campaign does exactly that.

A song with a life of its own

“Linger” already carries memory. The melody, the vocal line and the emotion are part of culture. People know the song and bring their own history to it. Licensing a track like this gives a campaign access to that emotional memory, but the choice of Frank Watkinson makes it feel new again.

Mother found him through his acoustic cover of Slipknot’s “Snuff” on YouTube. His performance style is intimate, vulnerable and completely his own. He can take a large, dramatic song and bring it close enough to feel like someone is singing it in your living room.

That quality becomes the heart of the KFC film. Mother recognised what made him special and built the idea around it. The result feels natural because the artist, the song and the concept all belong together.

Why this matters now

We are surrounded by more content than ever. AI has made it faster and cheaper to produce images, music and copy at scale, but most of it passes without leaving much behind. Brands that want to be remembered need stronger cultural choices. Real artists bring personality, history and imperfection. Great songs bring recognition and emotional weight. Together, they give a campaign something people can genuinely connect with.

That belief sits at the heart of how we work at Clear Music. Music should carry the idea. It should help a campaign travel, stay in people’s heads and earn a place in culture. A famous song still needs the right concept, and the KFC film works because every choice points in the same direction. The red curtain, the restrained performance, Watkinson’s voice and “Linger” all create the same feeling. One man, one guitar and one song people already love. That is enough to make the campaign impossible to ignore.

And respect to The Cranberries and the writers behind “Linger”. The song gives the entire idea its emotional foundation.

For brands planning national or international campaigns, the lesson is simple: choose music people already care about, work with artists who bring something real, and let the performance carry the message.
